Because, if you don’t, you lose up to 80% of your leverage and influence. In any relationship, environment, or problem-solving situation, you are the part of the equation you have the most control over. Use it.

It may sound simplistic. But there are many layers to this title. As you read the upcoming entries, and if you engage in any of the tele-seminars, e-courses, or coaching programs, you’ll see that I myself believe that any change I desire must start with me. I believe that my influence expands the more I focus on what I can do, rather than on how other people or situations must change. (By the way, if you don’t believe this, I challenge you to write in and explain your point of view.)

What I can do will depend on:

  • how self-aware I am,
  • my talents, skills and experience,
  • my ability to imagine different possibilities and their consequences,
  • and ultimately my courage.

Therefore, it only makes sense that to increase my influence over any situation, I should ‘develop myself first’. It may sound self-evident. But in actual fact, it is very difficult to practice consistently. Life is a moving target, and full of surprises.

This blog is intended to spark dialogue about personal development in the humanitarian aid sector. I am not an experienced blogger (yet!). I do not claim to be an expert. I am not an academic. I hope that experts and academics will contribute freely to this dialogue. Above all, my wish is that the blog is a useful resource for managers and employees alike – to assist with developing their personal and professional capacity to serve their beneficiaries.

The blog will begin with a focus on personal development and the important role managers play in supporting themselves and staff. It will be interesting and exciting to see where it goes from there!
